Henry Clinton was a British army officer and politician who served as the Commander-in-Chief of the British forces during the American Revolutionary War from 1778 to 1782. He led British campaigns in the Southern colonies, including the capture of Charleston in 1780, one of the biggest successes for the British during the war.
He died at Cockenhatch, near Royston, Herts, on the 15th of February 1846. The younger son, Sir Henry Clinton (1771–1829), entered the army in 1787 and saw some service with the Prussians in Holland in 1789. He served on the staff of the duke of York in 1793–94, becoming brevet-major in 1794, and lieutenant-colonel of a line regiment in 1796.
