Dudley Conspiracy (1555) Another conspiracy was hatched against Mary in Dec 1555, called the Dudley Conspiracy after one of its main architects, Sir Henry Dudley. Dudley, kinsman of John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, was the second son of John Sutton de Dudley and younger brother of Edmund Sutton, 4th baron Dudley.
Dudley’s son Robert would later become a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, and in 1575 she visited Dudley Castle, where it was considered as a possible place to imprison Mary, Queen of Scots. The castle was held by the Royalists during the English Civil War and was besieged by Parliamentarian troops in 1644 and 1646, before it was at last surrendered on May 13, 1646.

On this day in Tudor history, 7th July 1556, in the reign of Queen Mary I, Henry Peckham and John Danyell were hanged, drawn and quartered after being found guilty of treason for their involvement in the Dudley Conspiracy.
