  1. The title Earl of Arundel is the oldest extant Earldom and perhaps the oldest extant title in the Peerage of England. It is currently held by the Duke of Norfolk, and is used (along with the Earldom of Surrey) by his heir apparent as a courtesy title. It was created in 1138 for the Norman baron Sir William d'Aubigny.

  2. The Earl also had two daughters, Jane, who was married to Lord Lumley, and Mary. Mary married Thomas Howard, 4 th Duke of Norfolk but died in 1557 after giving birth to a son, Phillip. This meant that Philip became the heir of the 12th Earl Arundel. This is how the Fitzalan Earls of Arundel became linked with the Howard Dukes of Norfolk.

She lived a life devoted to her son, Thomas Howard, and religion, as she converted to the illegal and underground Catholic Church in England in 1582, in defiance of Queen Elizabeth I 's policy of Caesaropapism .
