  2. My theory is that the author is Henry Gladstone, 1st Baron Gladstone of Hawarden. He was married to the second daughter of Lord Rendel. Also he purchased the estate of [Hawarden Castle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawarden_Castle_(18th_century)) after the death of his nephew in WWI and lived there from 1921-1935 when he died.
