Frederick, Hereditary Prince of Denmark He was the only surviving son of King Frederick V by his second wife, Juliana Maria of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. After the fall of Johann Friedrich Struensee in 1772, former Hereditary Prince Frederick was installed as regent, acting on behalf of his half-brother, King Christian VII, who was mentally unstable .
The Hereditary Prince was far less popular than the King was. Further, his mother-in-law, Princess Helena , was accused of supporting the Nazi movement during the Second World War . These factors, combined with a belief that the Salic law was outdated, resulted in the movement to change the succession law so that Frederick's eldest daughter, the then Princess Margrethe , could inherit the throne.

Crown Prince Frederik, King Christian VII’s son, had no intention of allowing Frederik and his mother Juliana to continue their rule. In 1784, the Crown Prince reached the age of legal majority and then ruled permanently as Prince Regent.
