Charles was the eldest son of Prince Hermann of Solms-Hohensolms-Lich (1838–1899) and his wife Agnes, Countess of Stolberg-Wernigerode (1842–1904). Marriage and issue. He married on 16 October 1894 in Wernigerode with Princess Emma of Stolberg-Wernigerode (1875–1956), his cousin and daughter of the prince Otto of Stolberg-Wernigerode.

Como noble hesiano, Hermann de Solms-Lich-Hohensolms fue miembro de la cámara alta de los estados del Gran Ducado de Hesse de 1872 a 1874 y desde 1880 hasta su muerte en 1899. Hermann Otto Solms (born Hermann Otto Prinz zu Solms-Hohensolms-Lich; 24 November 1940) is a German politician of the Free Democratic Party (FDP). Between 1980 and 2013, he was a member of the Bundestag , from 1991 to 1998 as Chairman of the FDP parliamentary party and from 1998 to 2013 as Vice President of the Bundestag.
