It arose from the Bolshevik wing of the Russian Social Democratic Workers’ Party that broke off from the right-wing Menshevik group.
In 1912, the party formally split, and the predecessor to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union became a distinct entity. Its history since then can roughly be divided into the following periods: the early years of the Bolshevik Party in secrecy and exile. the period of the October Revolution of 1917.
The Bolsheviks ultimately became the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The Bolsheviks, or Reds, came to power in Russia during the October Revolution phase of the 1917 Russian Revolution, and founded the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR).
