Horace Dutton Taft (December 28, 1861 – January 28, 1943) was an American educator, and the founder of The Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut, United States . Early life. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the younger brother of William Howard Taft of the powerful Taft family. [1] .
In 1936, after 46 years as head of school, Horace Dutton Taft retired. Since his inauspicious start at Pelham Manor he had come to be regarded as one of the most revered head of schools in New England.
In 1912, Horace Dutton Taft incorporated the Taft School, giving one-sixth ownership to faculty member Harley Fish Roberts. Fifteen years later Taft and Roberts turned the school over to a board of trustees, making it a non-profit institution.
