Born into the House of Bernadotte, Ingrid was the only daughter of King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden and his first wife, Princess Margaret of Connaught. In 1935, she married the then Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and they had three daughters: Margrethe , Danish monarch from 1972 to 2024; Benedikte ; and Anne-Marie , queen consort of Greece from 1964 to 1973.
