In 1806, the city became the capital of the Duchy of Nassau. Since 1841, the newly built Wiesbaden City Palace was the principal Nassauian residence.

He commanded a Brigade at the Battle of Jemappes (1792). In 1806 he became a field marshal. Archduke Charles of Austria was noted as one of the best generals of Europe.
