The gold-edged medallion shows the tribal symbol of the Zähringers in coloured enamel. Around the circle is the order's motto, FÜR EHRE UND WAHRHEIT (German for "FOR HONOUR AND TRUTH"). On the back, the Zähringer lion is portrayed on a red background. The order's ribbon is green with orange-yellow stripes along the edges.
The house was historically related to the royal House of Zähringen. The last Margrave was Philip of Hachberg-Sausenberg , who died without sons in 1503. His daughter Johanna of Hachberg-Sausenberg succeeded him as Countess of Neuchâtel , while the Landgraviate of Sausenberg, the lordship of Badenweiler, the lordship of Rötteln and Schopfheim went to Margrave Christopher I of Baden .

After the Turks were defeated, Frederick participated on the Dutch side in the Franco-Dutch War. In 1676, he began a siege on the fortress of Philippsburg; after he captured the city on 17 September of that year, it was added to the Baden-Durlach territories. He died on 10 or 31 [1] January 1677 at the Karlsburg Castle in Durlach.
