Hugh le Despenser, 1st Baron le Despenser (1223 – 4 August 1265) was an important ally of Simon de Montfort during the reign of Henry III. He served briefly as Justiciar of England in 1260 and as Constable of the Tower of London.

In 1295, Hugh Despenser was summoned to Parliament. This is held to have created a hereditary barony. Hugh Despenser, 1st/2nd Baron le Despencer (1262–1326) (created Earl of Winchester, 1322) (attainted 1326) Attainder reversed 1398; see creation of 1357 below.

Hugh le Despenser (c. 1308/9 – 8 February 1349), Baron le Despenser, who was summoned to Parliament in 1338. At his death without issue, his nephew Edward , son of his brother Edward, was created Baron le Despenser in 1357.

Oct. 27, 1326, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Eng.), also known as Hugh the Elder, was summoned to Parliament as a baron in 1295. He fought in France and Scotland for Edward I and was sent by him on several embassies, including two to the pope.
