Annesi Hürrem Sultan'ın ölümünden sonra, kardeşi Bayezid ile girdiği taht mücadelesinde babası Süleyman'ın da desteğini aldı. Süleyman'ın vefatının ardından, II. Selim (Sarı Selim) olarak Osmanlı Padişahı oldu. 1574'te ölene kadar padişah olarak kaldı.
