She was a daughter of Prince Johann Georg zu Schoenaich-Carolath (1873-1920) and Princess Hermine Reuss (1887-1947), who in 1922 remarried to the Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany.

In 1625, the much smaller County of Pyrmont became part of the much larger County of Waldeck through inheritance and the combined territory was known as the County of Waldeck-Pyrmont.
