In the Mecca centers on the Mecca Flats apartment complex in Chicago but also expands beyond it, connecting the disillusioned inhabitants of the dilapidated building to people suffering the conditions of racism everywhere.
Early work and A Street in Bronzeville. Brooks graduated from Wilson Junior College in Chicago in 1936. She published many of her early verses in the Chicago Defender, the most influential African American newspaper of the first half of the 20th century.
In the Mecca is the first volume of poetry that Brooks wrote in ten years following the publication of Maud Martha. This slim volume shows the author's maturity and speaks to the changing African American experience. The first half of this volume is the title poem In the Mecca.
