Isabel of Portugal was a cousin of King Afonso V of Portugal. Her father was Prince Joao of Portugal (1400-1442), Duke of Beja, who had married Isabel of Braganza, a daughter of his illegitimate half-brother. In 1447 Isabel of Portugal appeared on the stage of history, when King Juan II of Castile (1405-1454) was looking for a bride.
When Isabel de Braganca was born on 2 October 1402, in Barcelos Vila Boa e Vila Frescainha São Martinho e São Pedro, Barcelos, Braga, Portugal, her father, Dom Afonso de Portugal - I Duque de Bragança, was 25 and her mother, Beatriz Pereira De Alvim, was 22. She married Infante John Constable of Portugal on 11 November 1424, in Portugal.

Hija del Rey Juan II de Castilla (1405-1454) y de su segunda esposa, Isabel de Portugal ( 1428?-1496), la futura Isabel La Católica apenas llegó a conocer a su padre, fallecido en julio de 1454. Sus primeros años de vida transcurrieron en Arévalo (Ávila), en compañía de su madre y de su hermano el Infante Alfonso (1453-1468).
