Isabel de Valois i de Mèdici (Fontainebleau, França, 2 d'abril de 1545 - Palau d'Aranjuez, Espanya, 3 d'octubre de 1568) anomenada també Isabel de la Pau, fou una princesa francesa de la dinastia Valois, que va esdevenir reina consort de Castella i de Catalunya i Aragó (1559-1568) així com dels diversos dominis del seu espòs Felip II de Castella.
Descripción. El cuadro muestra a Isabel de Valois, sosteniendo una miniatura de su esposo Felipe II de España en su mano derecha. Su ropa negra da testimonio de la austeridad de la corte española en ese momento. Su iconografía deriva del Retrato de Isabel de Portugal, la madre de Felipe, del pintor italiano renacentista Tiziano.

In this three-quarter portrait Queen Isabel de Valois (1546-1568) wears a black velvet gown with round sleeves from which her slashed red silk undersleeves embroidered with gold and silver thread peep out. On her head is a tilted flat cap which, like the buttons adorning the gown, is decorated with diamonds and rubies.

Her early death and the survival of some striking portraits have contributed in good measure to the aura of romantic tragedy that still envelops her.
