It is the oldest Catholic university in the United States of America. In the 19th century, the university sold more than 300 slaves in order to pay for its expansion.

Students named the first bulldog “Hoya,” but the canine stubbornly refused (as bulldogs do) to respond to anything but his given name, “Jack.” The dog won, and students began to call him Jack, beginning a tradition that continues today.
