The show's format was designed to stimulate an interest in reading, and usually involved an actor reading an abridged version of a children's novel or folk tale whilst seated in an armchair.

It was the simplest of ideas: someone read a story into the microphone, or to camera. All you had to do was listen. The word Jackanory comes from an old nursery rhyme:
