13 de ago. de 2020 · Ruisdael was born in Haarlem, the son of a little known painter, Isaack Jacobsz. van Ruisdael, who was also a dealer and frame-maker. He probably trained with his uncle Salomon van Ruysdael, and in 1648 became a member of the Haarlem painters' guild. Around 1650 he travelled to the hilly area around Bentheim across the German border.

In 1912, Hofstede de Groot attributed it to Gerrit van Hees (ca. 1625–1670); Stechow, in 1938, more plausibly proposed Van Ruisdael's cousin Jacob Salomonsz van Ruysdael (1629/30–1681). When the panel was owned by Nathaniel Thayer in Boston, it was considered to be by Hobbema (1638–1709) on the basis of a false signature.

His uncle Salomon was a prominent Haarlem artist, particularly known for his river landscapes. Salomon and Isaack signed with Ruysdael, while later Jacob used a slightly differently spelling, Ruisdael.
