He was born at his family's home in Carlton House Terrace, London and educated Harrow and Christ Church, Oxford.

  3. James Alexander is purported to have made his fortune in the service of the East India Company. He built Caledon House in 1779, either on or a short distance from the site of the Hamilton’s original house, engaging the services of architect Thomas Cooley.

  4. Earl of Caledon, of Caledon in the County of Tyrone, is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1800 for James Alexander, 1st Viscount Caledon. He was a merchant who had made an enormous fortune in India. He also represented the constituency of Londonderry City in the Irish House of Commons.
