He was Deputy Clerk of the Closet from 1745 to 1746. James was a canon of St George's Chapel, Windsor when he was nominated bishop of the Diocese of Hereford on 8 April 1746. James Beauclerk (1671-1680) was the illegitimate son of King Charles II Stuart and Nell Gwyn. His name was given to him by inference when on December 27, 1676, the king conferred the name, Charles Beauclerk and the titles Baron Heddington and Earle of Burford on James older brother. Thereafter James was known as "James Beauclerk."

James Beauclerk. On Christmas Day 1671, Nell gave birth to her second son with King Charles, who was christened James, after the Duke of York. Like his brother, he remained without a surname until December 1676, and was called Master James for the first five years of his life.
