  1. In 1562, Morton joined Lord James (now Earl of Moray) on an expedition to the north against George Gordon, 4th Earl of Huntly, and was largely responsible for his defeat at Corrichie. He now replaced Huntly as Lord Chancellor. In 1565, (perhaps surprisingly) Morton backed Henry, Lord Darnley, his cousin, in his suit to marry Mary.

He was the custodian at Lochleven Castle of Queen Mary.
