Duff was a Conservative MP for Banffshire from 1818 to 1827 and created a peer in 1827. He retired to Duff House and established himself as a popular landlord, focusing on his interests in farming and cattle raising. James Duff, fifth Earl Fife, nephew of fourth Earl (see above).
