John Hamilton, 1st marquess of Hamilton (born 1532/35—died April 12, 1604) was a Scottish nobleman active in Scottish and English politics and in the unsuccessful negotiations for the release of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots. The third son of James Hamilton, 2nd earl of Arran, he was given the abbey of Arbroath in 1551.
James Hamilton married (second) before 23 November 1516 Janet Beaton, daughter of David Beaton, 1st Lord Creich, and Comptroller of Scotland; and widow of Robert Livingston of Easter Wemyss and Drumry (who was killed at Flodden 9 September 1513). Janet predeceased her second husband in 1522.
