James Harold Charles Hamilton was born on 19 August 1969 in Paddington, London to James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Abercorn and his wife Alexandra Hamilton, Duchess of Abercorn (nee Phillips), the then-Marquess and Marchioness of Hamilton. He has two siblings; Lady Sophia (born 1973) and Lord Nicholas (born 1979).
