James Hargreaves (1721–78) James Hargreaves was a weaver from Lancashire in north-west England, who invented the ‘spinning jenny’, which was the earliest of a succession of inventions that enabled the industrialization of cotton spinning. The name ‘jenny’ for his machine came from the words ‘engine’ and its shorter form ‘gin’.

Among them were the flying shuttle, the spinning jenny, the spinning frame, and the cotton gin. Together, these new tools allowed for the handling of large quantities of harvested cotton.
James Hargreaves was born on December 13th, 1720 in Lancashire, England. Little is known of his early life, but he worked as a weaver, using a hand loom. In fact, he seems to have worked as a weaver for most of his life. As stated above, James Hargreaves is famous for the invention of the spinning jenny in 1764.
