  1. James Hay, 1st Earl of Carlisle KB (c. 1580 – March 1636) was a Scottish courtier and English nobleman. Life. He was the son of Sir James Hay of Fingask, second son of Peter Hay of Megginch (a branch member of Hay of Leys, a younger branch of the Erroll family) and his wife Margaret, daughter of Crichton of Ruthven. [1] .

  2. The second creation came in 1622, when James Hay, 1st Viscount Doncaster, was made Earl of Carlisle. He was a great favourite of James I and had already been created Lord Hay in the Peerage of Scotland in 1606, as well as Baron Hay , of Sawley in the County of York, and Viscount Doncaster in 1618.
