James Radclyffe, 3rd Earl of Derwentwater (26 June 1689 – 24 February 1716) was an English peer who participated in the Jacobite rising of 1715 and was executed for treason . Life. Radclyffe was the son of Edward Radclyffe, 2nd Earl of Derwentwater and Lady Mary Tudor, the natural daughter of Charles II by Moll Davis.

22 de feb. de 2023 · James Radclyffe, 3rd Earl of Derwentwater, was 26 years old when he was executed for treason for his role in the 1715 Jacobite Uprising. Centuries later he would be remembered as a martyr and hero in a series of sad English ballads.
The Earl was a key player in the 1715 Rising in which he took an active part. After surrendering at Preston, he was attainted and condemned to death. Attempts to win a reprieve were in vain and he was beheaded on Tower Hill on 24 February 1716.

It was the 3rd earl of Derwentwater, James, who is perhaps the most widely known member of the Radclyffe family. James was brought up in the exile court of St Germain as a companion to the young prince, James Francis Edward Stuart, and succeeded to the family title in 1705.
