In August 1548 Lord John Stewart and his half-brother Lord Robert sailed for France from Dumbarton with Mary, Queen of Scots. James Stewart, Commendator of Kelso and Melrose (c. 1529–1557) was a member of the Scottish royal family. James Stewart was a son of James V of Scotland and Elizabeth Shaw, a member of the Schaw of Sauchie family. His exact birthdate is unknown. A document dated 1534 states he was in his fifth year.
18 de mar. de 2021 · James Stewart was the eldest son among at least nine illegitimate children of James V and the half-brother of Mary, Queen of Scots. This 16th century seal indicates Stewart's position of commendator of Melrose and Kelso abbeys, bestowed on him by his father.

His mother is sometimes said to have been the Elizabeth Schaw who a mistress of James V of Scotland and mother of James Stewart, Commendator of Kelso, but she died in 1536. He was however a kinsman of the Master of Work, William Schaw and Elizabeth Schaw, Countess of Annandale.
