He served as Commendator of the Abbeys of Holyrood (December 1497), Dunferline (June 1500), and Arbroath (July 1503), and in 1500 was a Papal Legate. [1] In 1502 he became Chancellor of Scotland. [4] James Stewart, Duke of Ross, died unmarried between 12 - 17 January 1503/4, and was buried in St Andrews Cathedral. [1] [5]
