Este plan llegó a oídos de Napoleón y éste ordenó al general Augereau que tomase cartas en el asunto. Éste partió hacia París con sus hombres. Tras tomar la ciudad, Pichegru y Barthélemy fueron arrestados, otros lograron huir.
