A well-liked and highly respected member of the community, he passed away on December 10, aged 94 years, in the Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar, after a short illness.
John Bellingham was the son of John Bellingham Sr., a land agent, and Elizabeth, daughter from a well-off family in Huntingdonshire. Bellingham’s father became mentally ill when Bellingham was nine and died in an asylum two years later. His family was provided for by his mother’s brother-in-law, William Daw.
His murderer, John Bellingham, was executed after a rushed trial and a failed insanity defence. In this article, the writer examins the case, concludes that Bellingham was subject to a mental disorder and speculates whether the case would have preceded the landmark M’Naghten decision by some 30 years had it not been for political imperatives.
