Field Marshal John Byng, 1st Earl of Strafford GCB, GCH, PC (Ire) (1772 – 3 June 1860) was a British Army officer and politician.

John Byng was thus a great-grandson of the 1st Earl of Strafford. John Byng was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Earl. He was a Whig politician and held minor office under Lord Grey , Lord Melbourne and Lord John Russell .

29 de nov. de 2023 · Field Marshal and politician; MP for Poole Byng entered the Army in 1793 and fought under Col. Arthur Wesley (later Duke of Wellington) in Flanders from 1793 until 1795. In 1811, he was promoted to a Brigadier-General and fought in the Peninsular War in battles in Spain and southern France.
