Admiral John Byng (baptised 29 October 1704 – 14 March 1757) [1] was a British Royal Navy officer who was court-martialled and executed by firing squad. After joining the navy at the age of thirteen, he participated at the Battle of Cape Passaro in 1718.

He is best known for the loss of Minorca to the French at the Battle of Minorca, marking the start of the Seven Years War in 1756. In 1756, a fleet under Byng's command sailed for the Mediterranean to support British forces in Minorca.
