A member of the Democratic Party , he previously served as the 31st Controller of California from 2007 to 2015 and on the California State Board of Equalization from 1997 to 2007.

As the state’s banker, he oversaw trillions of dollars in annual transactions, managed a $75 billion investment portfolio, and was the nation’s largest issuer of municipal bonds. Prior to being elected Treasurer, Chiang served from 2007 through 2014 as State Controller.
