Aide-de-Camp. John Ponsonby Conroy was born in Caernarvonshire, Wales, on 21 October 1786 and was one of six children born to John Ponsonby Conroy, a barrister, and Margaret Wilson, who were both Irish. On 8 September 1803, Conroy was commissioned in the Royal Artillery as a Second Lieutenant and was promoted to First lieutenant on 12 September.

A decade later Sir John Conroy, as he then was, appeared as a knight in shining armour, totally in control of the Duchess of Kent's household and of Victoria.

John Ponsonby Conroy was born in Wales on 21 Oct 1786. His parents were Irish and John was educated in Dublin. He was commissioned into the RA in Sep 1803 and attended the RMA Woolwich in 1805. He served throughout the Napoleonic Wars but avoided active service.
