John Elphinstone, also known as John Elphinston (1722 – 28 February 1785), was a senior British naval officer who worked closely with the Russian Navy after 1770, with approval from the Admiralty, during the period of naval reform under Russian Empress Catherine II.
John Elphinstone, 8th Lord Elphinstone, was the second son of the 6th Lord. He was baptized at Airth on 28 August 1649. He married Isabel Maitland, daughter of Charles Maitland, Lord Hatton, in 1670. To address his debts, he sold much of the barony of Elphinstone, retaining only the "mansion-house and gardens, and grounds about the house".

Elphinstone spent much of his career as a post captain in the service of his kinsman, Admiral; Lord Keith. On 16 May 1793 Elphinstone was posted captain, and he flew the flag of Rear-Admiral Sir George Keith Elphinstone aboard the Glory 98 from May to August 1794.
