William Frederick was the second son of Ernest Casimir I, Count of Nassau-Dietz and Sophia Hedwig of Brunswick-Lüneburg. He married Countess Albertine Agnes of Nassau, the fifth daughter of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange on 2 May 1652 in Cleves. They had three children:

Henriette Louise (20 June 1623 – 24 August 1650) married on 21 August 1642 with Margrave Albert II of Brandenburg-Ansbach Leopold Frederick (30 May 1624 – 15 June 1662), his successor After Elisabeth Magdalena's death, Louis Frederick married on 15 May 1625 with Anna Eleonora, daughter of Count John Casimir of Nassau-Weilburg (1677-1702).

Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh (15 January 1776 – 30 November 1834) was a great-grandson of King George II of Great Britain and the nephew and son-in-law of King George III. He was the grandson of both Frederick, Prince of Wales (George II's eldest son), and Edward Walpole.
His first marriage in 1570 was to Catherine, Princess of Brandenburg-Küstrin (1549–1602), daughter of John I, Margrave of Brandenburg-Küstrin, and Catherine, Duchess of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Joachim Frederick's second marriage, in 1603, was to Eleonore of Hohenzollern (1583–1607), daughter of Albert Frederick, Duke of Prussia and Mary Eleonore of Cleves.
Am 27.
