John of Denmark or John the Elder (aka Hans the Elder) (German: Johann der Ältere or Hans der Ältere; Danish: Hans den Ældre;) (29 June 1521 - 1 October 1580; born and died in Haderslev) was the only Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Haderslev.

As a co-ruler in the duchies of Holstein and of Schleswig, John the Elder is numbered as John II, continuing counting King John of Denmark as John I, Duke of Holstein and Schleswig. John of Denmark or John the Elder was the only Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Haderslev.

John was born on 25 March 1545 in Haderslev in the Duchy of Schleswig as the fourth child and third son of King Christian III of Denmark and Norway and his wife, Dorothea of Saxe-Lauenburg. When Christian III died in 1559, he left three sons.

Schleswig-Holstein-Hadersleben was a branch line of the House of Oldenburg, and of the territory held by the Duke of this branch. It was founded in 1544 by John II, as was compensated for not inheriting the Danish throne, with parts of Schleswig and Holstein. John II died childless in 1580, and the line died out with his death.
