It was created in 1667 following the death of Prince John VI and the partition of Anhalt-Zerbst with Anhalt-Mühlingen being created along with Anhalt-Dornburg for the younger sons of Prince John VI. Life. Christian August was the third son of John Louis I, Prince of Anhalt-Dornburg and Christine Eleonore of Zeutsch (1666–1699). After the death of his father in 1704, Christian August inherited Anhalt-Dornburg jointly with his brothers John Louis II, John Augustus (died 1709), Christian Louis (died 1710) and John Frederick (died 1742).

He was the sixth (but fourth surviving) son of John VI, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst , by his wife Sophie Auguste , daughter of Frederick III, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp .
Christian August fue el tercer hijo de Juan Luis I, príncipe de Anhalt-Dornburg y Christine Eleonore de Zeutsch (1666–1699).
