John Payne Todd (February 29, 1792 – January 16, 1852), was an American secretary. He was the first son of Dolley Payne and John Todd Jr. His father and younger brother died in the 1793 Philadelphia yellow fever epidemic, which killed nearly 10 percent of the city's population.

His father John Todd was a young and rising Philadelphia lawyer, married to Dolley Payne. They were active Quakers, at home in a large community of Quakers, some of whom, like her family, had left the South to find lives more compatible to their beliefs in Philadelphia.

Todd’s life is presented as a parable of what can happen when someone takes their status for granted and engages in self-destructive behavior.
