John Seymour (1914–2004) gilt als Gründervater der Selbstversorger-Bewegung. Er wuchs in England und der Schweiz auf, studierte Agrarwissenschaft in Kent und arbeite auf englischen Bauernhöfen. Anschließend leitete er fast zehn Jahre in Afrika eine Schaf- und Rinderfarm und war Landwirtschaftsexperte für die Regierung Großbritanniens.
