Earl Spencer is a title in the Peerage of Great Britain that was created on 1 November 1765, along with the title Viscount Althorp, of Althorp in the County of Northampton, for John Spencer, 1st Viscount Spencer. [1] [2] He was a member of the prominent Spencer family and a great-grandson of the 1st Duke of Marlborough.
John Spencer was previously created Baron Spencer of Althorp and Viscount Spencer in 1761. In 1765, he was advanced to the Viscounty of Althorp and the Earldom of Spencer. He served as the High Steward of St. Albans. On 20 December 1755, he married Georgiana [d. 1814], elder daughter of Right Hon. Stephen Poyntz of Midgham, Berkshire.
