George was potentially a better politician than Bute, for he had tenacity, and, as experience matured him, he could use guile to achieve his ends.

He bought a painting and a friendship, subsequently a relationship, blossomed. On the day before Valentine’s Day in 1999, they were married in the Marble Chapel at Mount Stuart – the same house in which she had, ironically, stayed while celebrating her engagement to her first husband.
