Tyler was the first Vice President to assume the presidency after the death of a sitting President (William Henry Harrison) and was a controversial figure during his time in office.
John Tyler signaled the last gasp of the Old Virginia aristocracy in the White House. Born a few years after the American Revolution in 1790 to an old family from Virginia's ruling class, Tyler graduated from the College of William and Mary at the age of seventeen, studied law, and went to work for a prestigious law firm in Richmond.

Not much is known about his childhood though he grew up on a plantation in Virginia. His mother died when he was only seven. At twelve, he entered the College of William and Mary Preparatory School.
