The seventh Duke, Teodósio II, became famous at a young age, having been made page to King Sebastião I and having marched into the Battle of Alcácer Quibir, [19] alongside the King and his uncle, Jaime of Braganza, at the age of ten.

This episode is known as the Transfer of the Portuguese Court to Brazil. The last French troops were expelled in 1812.

Debret remained in Brazil until 1831. He was one of the founders of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and organized Brazil’s first and second public art exhibitions, in 1829 and 1830.
