Heir to the Honour of Mowbray, Roger de Mowbray was a prominent Anglo-Norman baron who played major roles in royal politics during the reigns of King Stephen and Henry II. He was a participant in the Second Crusade, and is recorded as having fought alongside Hugh de Beauchamp at the Battle of Hattin in 1187.
