Mance was born on 6 June 1943, [1] one of four children of Sir Henry Stenhouse Mance, one-time chairman of Lloyd's of London, by his wife Joan Erica Robertson Baker.

  4. He was appointed Lord Justice of Appeal in 1999, and Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in 2005. Upon the creation of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in 2009, he became one of the Court's first Justices. He served as Vice-President of the Supreme Court from 2017 to 2018.

  5. Jonathan Hugh Mance read law at University College Oxford and was called to the Bar by the Middle Temple in 1965. He worked in a Hamburg law firm and then practised at the commercial Bar. In 1982, at the age of 39, he became a Queen's Counsel. In 1990, he was appointed a Recorder, and was Chairman of the Banking Appeals Tribunal from 1992-1993.
