Life. Works. References. External links. Joseph Edkins (19 December 1823 – 23 April 1905) was a British Protestant missionary who spent 57 years in China, 30 of them in Beijing. As a Sinologue, he specialised in Chinese religions. He was also a linguist, a translator, and a philologist.

London Missionary Society. Beijing, Shanghai. Born in England in 1823 and a graduate of London University, Joseph Edkins was ordained in 1847 and served with the London Missionary Society. He was an adventurous pioneer evangelist, translator, philologist, author, and expert in Chinese religions.
